Scholarship Fund
Millerton Legion Post 178 of the American Legion
Department of New York since 1994 has been providing
scholarships of up to $1,000 annually to the youth of our
community. The Veterans of our community realize that our
commitment to our Nation and our way of life can only be
preserved though the education of our youth who are the future
of our nation.
The SCHOLARSHIP shall be determined by
application, based upon the following criteria; academic
excellence, leadership, community service, demonstrating
Americanism, and the demonstration of financial need. Included
with your application a brief, typed, one page essay on why you
believe you should be considered for this scholarship. With each
application we require a
certified transcript from
your High School, for first time applicants, or College for
those who are reapplying. For those not able to provide a
certified transcript, we require a signed memorandum from the
school certifying your transcript. Furthermore the applicant
must be a resident of either the Pine Plains or Webutuck School
Districts and/or a direct relative of a current member of this
Post. The number of scholarships awarded will be based upon the
Legions income available any given year.. Determination for the
$1,000 scholarship will be made by the Scholarship Committee as
per the Constitution of the American Legion and criteria
established by the Scholarship Committee. Special attention will
be given to direct descendants of Active Post 178 members.
Deadline for all applications is April 1 st
of applicant’s graduation year
and for all subsequent reapplications.
In order to receive your Scholarship Award, you
must upon the completion of your first Semester of college send
a certified copy of your transcript to the Legion Post. Upon
receipt of the transcript you will be issued your check in the
amount awarded. BOY STATERS from this Post may be eligible for a
one (1) time scholarship upon their completion and their
reporting back to this Post after that year’s program. Those who
participate in Boys State may also apply for the $1,000 in
addition to the $500 scholarship. The Scholarships are to be
awarded upon graduation from high school and acceptance to
college. This Scholarship will be issued by the Executive
Committee of Post 178 and the Boys State Committee. The number
and amount of this scholarship will be determined by the
availability of funds after the issuance of the $1,000
scholarships with a maximum of $500.00 per recipient.
